Luxurious Tented Wilderness Camp from £45 pp per night full board
In the deep south of Morocco in the Draa Valley region of Zagora and Tagounite the Sahara Desert is a beguiling wilderness of palm-filled oases, vast sand dunes, ancient lake-beds, camel caravans and men in blue. Just a one day drive from Marrakech or Agadir and accessible only by 4×4, camel or on foot it is here that the stylish Sahara Safari Camp is located.
Quality assured as a member of the mid-market plus/4 star Moivaro Morocco group of riads and tented camps, this Moroccan Sahara retreat offers travellers the chance to experience the Sahara sleeping in comfort and style.
A pioneering Moroccan responsible tourism project the Sahara Safari Camp is unique in its concept, style and location. Working in close partnership with the local tribal community the camp brings social and economic benefits to the region whilst minimising any environmental impact on the stunning wilderness in which it is located.
Access and Location
From Marrakech the Sahara Safari Camp can be reached in a day by 4×4 on a long (but scenically diverse) drive through the High Atlas to Ouarzazate and along the palm-filled plantations and fields of the Draa Valley to Zagora on the fringe of the Sahara. From Ouarzazate the drive to the camp takes 4-5 hours.
Spacious Tented Accommodation
The camp accommodates a maximum of 18 guests in 8 spacious ‘Caidal’ safari tents. Spread out over four hectares of dune and date palm strewn Sahara each tent offers a private wilderness experience with a breathtaking view.
Duvets with white cotton covers, sheets and blankets offer warmth and comfort on chilly Saharan nights. Each tent comprises a groundsheet covered with Berber rugs, chairs, tables, mirror, storage racks, lantern supports and solar-charged lights. Iron wash-stands are equipped with locally-made clay bowls and water jugs, filled with hot water on request.
Hot showers can be enjoyed in the privacy of individual shower tents under Saharan ‘bush-style’ showers. Environmentally-friendly bio-toi loos are available for guest use. Solar panels harness the sun’s rays providing power for lanterns and charging batteries.
Meals are enjoyed either alfresco or inside a dining tent which also doubles as a ‘salon’ for convivial social gatherings to perhaps enjoy a bottle or two of the local ‘Sahara Reserve’ wine, perhaps a cold beer or pot of mint tea.
Delicious meals are freshly prepared by our chef in a traditional Moroccan style with a choice of meat and vegetarian tagines and couscous for dinner, salads or picnics for lunch (depending on the activity of the day) and Moroccan pancakes, freshly baked bread, local jam and honey for breakfast.
The majority of ingredients are fresh products. All meat, vegetables and fruit are purchased directly from sellers in nearby Tagounite market as part of our responsible tourism ethos in support of the local community.
Bounded by the Moroccan Sahara Desert, the Sahara Safari Camp is set in a wilderness location with incredibly varied landscapes. Excursions can be taken to nearby oases and towering dunes in your 4x4 vehicle. Alternatively relax in camp, explore on foot or enjoy a camel ride. Star-gaze at night and enjoy the setting and rising sun. For wildlife enthusiasts, desert fox, gerbil and a variety of bird species are regularly seen.
The camp is open throughout the year. Do bear in mind that winter nights can be cold (the cosy duvets will keep you warm), and that Christmas / New Year is extremely popular. A stay during full moon is particularly memorable as moonlight illuminates the dunes, palms and mountains which surround camp.
The camp should appeal to travellers who have an appreciation of nature and who seek accessible wilderness. We offer a high degree of exclusivity and service well away from the large commercialised camps in Merzouga and M’hamid. Big enough to accommodate a group of 20 guests, tents are available on a nightly basis to individuals, couples, families or groups of friends.
The camp is suitable for children of all ages: the desert environment is safe for kids under the watchful eye of their parents. Seven of our tents are large enough to accommodate parents and one child. We also have a larger family tent which sleeps up to 4 people.
